all signed up

to run the twilight 5k @ the Oakland Running Fest. I thought it would be good practice and training for hopefully the goal of running the half marathon in June (see jane run).
Very excited.

back to the power tools..

That cute little teeny tiny break I had from making shadow boxes has come to an end. Now that I don't work my second job there is no excuse to not make more art and get things in order. I also have a goal to finish my commissions by the end of the month... a good solid reasonable goal.

I spent most of the day outside cutting wood for 21 new boxes - 11 of them are already accounted for but the rest will make their debut on Etsy. Making these boxes is tedious and mind numbing at times. A positive thing that happened was that I took my housemates suggestion and moved my space heater to the studio space (the cold garage). I was toasty warm while I drilled, hammered, and painted.

The only hiccup I came across was the fact that I don't have enough backs to the frames. I need to call my buddy Trev who cuts large sheets of wood for me.

I also have been busy working on my collaborations. I have been really into using canvas.. in the past I have been into wood but I think it's important to open yourself up to new mediums.. pictures to come.

mmm. bjork..mmm...

my sister's sense of humor

Recently I asked my sister if I could borrow the movie "Mommie Dearest". I had plans with some friends to watch this painful little gem around the holidays.. I don't know why we wanted to torture ourselves but we did... and sometime I don't think one should ask questions.

My sister said that she left the movie out for me and I should swing by and pick it up.

This is what was left for me:

so awesome!

Turns out..

my impromptu show hangs until this Friday... very cool. The show hangs a whole week long.. pretty cool. Again, I have to say I love when that sorta thing randomly happens.

I recently purchased a large amount of wood to start doing my commissions and get my heart series pulled together and possibly finished. I do think I will continue to make more of this series to sell on Etsy. I'm hoping this will motivate me to continue making things for my Etsy page. But I'm very much in the space to move on to new projects.

Speaking of new projects.. I'm continuing to make art for my collaboration pieces with Hollyce.
Here are two more pictures of some recent things going to her.

It will be interesting to see what Hollyce does with them.

Don't know if you could tell but I love drawing power lines..especially in a "Dali" sort of way. I also love drawing tree.. just a factoid.

Here are some recent heart boxes with power lines: (these sold in Oakland Under $100)

Music wise..
I have been listening to tons of different stuff but have really been enjoying PJ Harvey's "Is This Desire?". Such a good album!!! I forgot how much I love this album. I have many memories of listening to this while I lived in Portland... seems very fitting for that town.
One of my favorite songs is "Angelene".

Until next time..

a very impromptu art show

I frequent a wine bar called Zza's in Oakland.. and when I say frequent I mean I practically live there. The staff have turned into close friends of mine. Last night I got a text from the owner asking me if I was around the area.. curious I ended up calling her and seeing what was up. Turns out there was a misunderstanding with the curator and next artist to show. There was no art on their walls and they weren't happy about it. The owner being a fan of my work as purchased a lot of my work in the past. They ended up hanging my work on the walls and asked me if I had any extra. I stopped by and gave them what I had.
The show hangs until Monday.. short and sweet.

I love when stuff like this happens.

Please join me..

In following my other blog called "The Lil' Red Roof"

It's my photo project.. and it's cool.

check it out - you'll be glad you did.

sadly sadly.....

I learned yesterday that Lhasa De Sela passed away. She passed away after a 21 month battle with breast cancer at the age of 37. She was one of my new favorite musicians..My bud Val got me hooked on her with the album "The Living Road"... so many songs on that album would just pick you up and hold you close on many hypnotic journeys. Some of my absolute favorites off that album are:

"Con Toda Palabra"
"Anywhere On This Road"
"My Name"
"Soon This Space Will Be Too Small"
-So many of her songs are just pure brilliance!

I immediately got into her first album, La Llorona.. another great album..
My favorite song is probably "Decara A La Pased"

Then in early 2009 she came out with a third self titled cd.. it's soooo good and I have yet to choose a favorite. The whole album is good, some of the songs make a whole lot more sense with the understanding that she was facing her own death.

I don't want to be a downer just wanted to pay my respects to an artist who I listen to very often while doing art. There was just something very nostalgic about her that motivated me in the studio.

The video for "Con Toda Palabra" always made me want to create... the song as well as the video is just the sorta thing I like that pulls something outta me.

I suppose this is my salute to a wonderful artist who will be missed..
